Railay is the most dramatic place to stay in Krabi. Sheer limestone cliffs, no road in, and three beaches within walking distance of wherever you sleep. It is also expensive — everything arrives by longtail, so prices across every tier run 30–50% above what the same room would cost in Ao Nang. Before you book: the Railay realities
Railay has no road. Every bag, gas cylinder and box of supplies arrives by longtail boat, and prices on the peninsula reflect that. Budget stays are possible, but ฿800 here buys considerably less than ฿800 in Ao Nang, and restaurant meals start around ฿80–180 at the cheapest spots on Railay East.
The longtail service from Ao Nang beach runs roughly 8am to 6pm — ฿100 each way in daylight, ฿50 surcharge after dark. You will wade on arrival (ankle to knee depending on the tide), so sandals and a dry bag for electronics are practical, not optional. From Krabi Town, you route via Ao Nang or catch a seasonal boat from the Krabi Town pier.
ATMs exist on Railay — a handful near Railay East — but they charge withdrawal fees and run out during peak periods. Come with enough cash for at least two days. Card acceptance at restaurants is patchy; most resorts accept cards for room charges, but bars and beach vendors are cash-only.
The dry season (November to April) is when Railay is at its best — calm crossings, clear water, dry climbing rock. It is also the most expensive period and when rooms sell out. Book well ahead if you are travelling in December or January. In the green season (May–October) the crossing can get rough on bad days and some services reduce, but room prices drop 30–40% and the peninsula is quieter.
Luxury tier: Rayavadee
Rayavadee is the most celebrated resort on Railay and one of the standout hotels in southern Thailand. It occupies the tip of the peninsula, directly behind Phra Nang Cave Beach — the finest beach in Krabi — surrounded on three sides by limestone cliffs and jungle. Non-guests access Phra Nang through the hotel grounds, which keeps the beach in front of it protected for a meaningful part of the day.
The accommodation is all pavilions and villas spread across tropical gardens, none of which rise above the treeline. Standard garden pavilions start around ฿18,000/night in the dry season; pool pavilions with private walled pools and open-air bathrooms push up to ฿25,000–32,000/night. What that price buys: exceptional service, an outstanding setting, multiple restaurants including a dinner-only terrace above the beach, and the experience of walking to Phra Nang before any day-trippers arrive.
It is not for everyone. The gardens are large, adding a walking component between room, restaurant and beach. The décor is elegant but dated in some pavilions, and food and beverage prices are steep even by Railay standards. But as a place to spend three or four nights on this peninsula, it is genuinely hard to match.
Best for: Couples celebrating something, or travellers who want Phra Nang as their doorstep.
Upper-mid tier: Avatar Railay and Railay Phutawan
Avatar Railay Resort is the best boutique option on the peninsula. Forty-eight rooms, adults-only, with a pool and a position that works: a short walk from Railay West beach and an easy path to Phra Nang. Low-season rates start around ฿1,800–2,500/night; in the dry season expect ฿3,500–5,000/night. The rooms are well designed and the service attentive without being formal. If you want something smaller and more characterful than the larger resorts without going budget, this is the pick.
Railay Phutawan Resort is a four-star property on Railay West with a conventional resort layout — pools, gardens, restaurant, rooms across several buildings. Rates sit in the ฿4,500–8,000/night range for a standard room in dry season, less in low season. It is competent rather than remarkable, but reliably comfortable and within walking distance of both Railay West and Phra Nang. A solid choice if Avatar Railay is fully booked.
Mid-range best value: Railay Bay Resort & Spa
Railay Bay Resort sits on the western side of the peninsula, close enough to Railay West beach to make evening swims easy and well placed for the short walk around to Phra Nang. For mid-range accommodation on Railay, it is the most balanced option: a decent pool, consistent service, and rates that do not require clearing a savings account.
Standard rooms start from around ฿3,300/night in low season and climb to ฿7,000–9,200/night in the dry-season peak. Upper-floor rooms get better air flow and views over the gardens and cliffs. What to watch: like all Railay properties, it looks better in photos than in reality if you compare against what a similar budget gets in Ao Nang. Book here when the point is Railay itself — for the beaches, the cliffs and the experience of the peninsula in the morning quiet — not for exceptional room quality. Budget tier: Railay East
Railay East is where the cheaper rooms are. It is the mangrove side of the peninsula, facing east and running muddy at low tide — not a swimming beach — but a five-minute flat walk across to Railay West or Phra Nang. The location is easy to live with.
Rapala Rock Wood Resort is a reliable mid-budget option on Railay East. The rooms are clean, the setting is pleasant rather than polished, and rates start around ฿1,500–2,000/night in low season, rising to ฿3,000+ in peak. The name reflects the wooden construction typical of East-side properties — guesthouse character, not resort. At the low end of the East-side market, expect fan rooms and shared bathrooms from ฿800–1,200/night.
The bar and restaurant strip on Railay East is where you eat cheaply: pad thai ฿80–120, a Chang beer around ฿80. A row of casual bar-restaurants lines the path between East and West, and this is where the evening congregates — Railay’s equivalent of a town centre.
Tonsai Beach: the cheapest option
Tonsai Beach sits north of Railay West, separated from the resort strip by a short scramble over rocks at low tide — about 10 minutes on foot — or a quick longtail at high tide. It is the climbers’ and backpackers’ beach: scruffier, louder after dark, and considerably cheaper than the Railay resort zone.
Bungalows and guesthouses on Tonsai run ฿500–1,200/night at the budget end. The vibe is deliberately low-key — this is not the right base for a honeymoon, but it is ideal if the point is cheap digs, cold beer and a climbing course. Several Railay climbing schools operate out of Tonsai, and the community around them gives it a different character from the polished resort strip five minutes away.

Railay East or Railay West?
The choice is roughly: pay more for Railay West, save 20–40% and walk five minutes from Railay East. There is no shame in choosing East — the beaches you came for are equally accessible, the food is cheaper, and the path between sides is flat and easy. If you are staying three nights or more, the savings add up.
The exception is if you want a resort with direct beach access and a pool — in that case you are on the West side by definition. Rayavadee, Railay Bay Resort, Avatar Railay and Railay Phutawan are all on or near the western beach.
